File management in an operating system (OS) involves organizing a computer's files and programs into a hierarchy of directories. The OS also manages the storage of these files on secondary devices like hard disk drives and solid-state drives.

  • Here are some functions of file management in an OS:

  • File creation: Allocates storage for new files.
  • File access: Allows users to read, write, and execute files, while also enforcing access permissions
  • File modification: Allows users to edit, update, or delete files
  • File organization: Maintains the file hierarchy and provides directory management
  • File details: Provides information about files, such as their location, owner, creation time, and type.

A file manager is a key component of an OS that organizes files into directories, folders, and sub-folders. It also provides a graphical interface to make it easier to find and navigate files. Some common functions of a file manager include:

Save, Search, Open, Delete, Rename, and Copy.
